The last time we were in Greece together, we got engaged, so it was incredible coming back! With just one weekend in Athens, and LOADS to see, do and eat, here are our top bucket-list recommendations.
#1. Athenian Riviera
For some reason, no one thinks of this area when they think of Athens! But Greece is home to a lovely section of the Mediterranean coastline, and it would be a shame to miss it. We did two main things here – have a deliciously healthy lunch (with a view of course!) at Taverna 37 at Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel. Secondly we went “swimming” at the scenic Lake Vouliagmeni which is surrounded by a huge limestone cave. The water is said to have healing properties, but we were too stressed trying to swim away from the fish who wanted to nibble at our feet.
#2. Ancient Ruins
Our two favourite ruins which you have to check out are Temple of Zeus and Acropolis. Surprisingly we preferred Zeus even though it was smaller and falling apart – seemed more authentic! The Acropolis is good, and a must-do, but there was too much scaffolding and repair work taking place!
In fact we preferred the Acropolis when we were a little further away!! There are two amazing rooftop bars at Monastiraki Square (A for Athens / 360 Degrees) with the most incredible views!!
In this same area, you can also check out monatiraki flea market for a bargain!
#3. Panathenaic Stadium
Time to whiz back to the Ancient Olympic Games – this place was awesome! Kudos to the tourists who were actually doing laps in the thirty degree heat! We were just pretending we were first place champions without moving a muscle!
#4. Eat Greek Food Continuously
Need we say more??? It’s all delicious!!! Get your hands on Greek salad, feta cheese, more feta cheese, Greek coffee and greek yogurt!
